  1. Pain: Beyond Nociception
    This seminar will review the nociceptive and biopsychosocial models of pain, with particular emphasis on psychological and sociological constructs that contribute to a patient's pain experience. Using information from neuropsychology and neurobiology, the course will explore some of the environments and cues that may inadvertently alter the pain level of the patient. Finally, strategies to identify and appropriately treat patients with signs and sympsoms of non-nociceptive pain will be discussed.

  2. Health Literacy - Why Does It Matter and How Can I address It?
    Problems with health literacy can affect patients’ access to physical therapy, participation in treatment, follow through after leaving the treatment session, and health outcomes. As the world of health care becomes more complex, persons with low health literacy are even more vulnerable. What groups of patients are likely to have low health literacy? What are the standardized methods for assessing it? What things can therapists do to be effective with patients who have difficulties in this area?

  3. The Good, Bad, and the Ugly: Treatment of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Centralized Pain Syndromes in Pediatrics
    This session is focused on conservative therapy treatment methods of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. The speaker will provide brief background information about the diagnosis, treatments, outcome measures, and specific application of techniques discussed. Multiple treatment ideas and specific areas of focus such as range of motion, weight-bearing, sensory input, pre-gait activities, ambulation progression, and higher level skills will be discussed and supported by case studies. A general recommended progression plan that has been implemented with this therapists group will also be introduced to provide some basic guidelines for a treatment plan.
